Science is Cool

Howdy friends and family,

My cousin Karen suggested we go to the OKC science museum as an adventure. We loaded up the 4 Webbs and gave Aunt Mary a break for a few hours.

An IMAX theater is attached to the complex so we walked straight to the ticket counter to see what was showing and when. We were excited to find out the "Legends of Flight" would start soon. We were the first ones in the theater and found the best seat in the dome-shaped theater. Easton could barely contain his enthusiasm, but Layla was apprehensive even before the movie started.

The movie was excellent. Layla asked, "are we flying in the airplane?" She thought all of us movie goers were actually flying in the cockpit of some airplane. The cinematography utilized great 3D animations of the design and inner workings of airplanes. Even down to the firing of pistons in the early model airplanes. Easton's mind really caught on to the concepts well. He continues to ask questions regularly about flight design and how the engine works.

After the movie Layla ruled the gymnastics area inside the science museum. She turned and twirled over every mat and obstacle in the play area.

Easton had a good time also. He did the same tricks he learned from the gym classes a few months ago.

Another cool exhibit was the Apollo Command Module simulator. Layla was afraid so I crammed into the child-sized compartment with Easton because he really wanted to do it. The guy outside pretending to be mission control talked to Easton through the headphones and microphone as we did a pretend countdown, launch, flight and water landing.

The play areas were huge and that meant we had to pay extra close attention to keep Uno and Dos from getting lost. At least we had man-to-man coverage between the two of us. The see-saw was a little shaky so I jumped on with the twins to stabilize it.

The twins stayed still against the ruler just long enough to get a picture. As you can see, they are no where near the minimum DisneyLand ride height. However, we're confident they will be by the time we get there next fall.

One of the coolest things Easton really enjoyed was the simulated tornado. The smoke came from the bottom in a swirling motion and the ventilation thing at the top sucked the smoke upwards. He asked, "Can I put my hand in it?" I gave him permission and he courageously ran his hand right through it.

This is what it would be like to have twelve toddlers. This isn't a "fun" house at all... more like a frightening scare closet because just thinking about caring for twelve Easton and Layla's gives me heart murmurs.

Just kidding. We giggled and talked all the way through the mirror maze. unfortunately Layla became disoriented and walked right into a mirror nose-first.

We commemorated the adventure with a standard parting shot as we left. Kendra was worn out more than any of us, but she did very well considering her aching knee.

One of the days brought weather experiences like the twins never had before. The wind was howling through the trees, storm clouds rolled in, and produced a terrific show of nature for us. I get very few moments where the twins are both cuddled up with me, but when the lightning and thunder show cranked up they were stunned. We talked about all the weather related things going on and the twins did very well in comprehension without freaking out or being scared. I did my best to lead by example there.

We did our fair share of lazying around the house, which I desperately needed. Easton is good about taking short breaks. I capitalized on the opportunity and we rested for a few minutes together.

Sonic is the only business within several miles of Aunt Mary's house which was rebuilt after the tornado leveled the area last year. They started rebuilding it within a week of the tornado. I took the twins there to get out of house and have a treat. I introduced them to one of the most marvelous creation ever... The banana split.

The three of us plowed through a huge stack of napkins then had to change clothes when we arrived home. More of the ice cream turned to a gooey mess than made it into our mouths, but we had a great time trying our best to eat it!

See you soon.
